At E3, things were looking positive for Nintendo. A host of great titles coming to the Wii U and 3DS, Mario Kart 8 boosted Wii U sales dramatically and we saw Reggie fight Iwata... Awesome!

Soon after however, a verdict was given in the ongoing Nintendo UK, Philips court battle. Philips is claiming that Nintendo have used its technology in Wii Remotes, Nunchucks, Wii Motion Plus, the Balance Board and the Wii U GamePad. Unfortunately the Big N lost the first of two infringement claims. It is not yet reported what Nintendo will owe to Philips because of this, but in today's world, it's no doubt a huge bag of money.

There is also a second claim by Philips that will be determined at a later date, but the initial claim will also be faced by Nintendo in Germany, France and the US. This verdict couldn't have come at a worse time for Nintendo, just as the Wii U was gaining speed, a slew of titles announced and to be released later this year, this has to be seen as a setback. There is no indication how the trial will go in the other three territories. Apple and Samsung have fought over patent infringements in these same countries and different verdicts are given by different courts, we will have to wait and see if Nintendo are as lucky as Samsung have been in the past.

.... at least we still have the Wii Classic Controller......
